Korean Fried Chicken Bao Buns

Cook Time 35 minutes (2-3 hours marinating time)

Servings 4-6

Ingredients

800g chicken thighs, sliced into bite-sized pieces

2 tbsp Gochujang Korean chilli paste

1 tbsp sugar

1 tbsp tomato sauce

1 tbsp tamari sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp finely grated ginger

1 large garlic clove, finely minced

Sesame seeds to garnish

Green onions, finely sliced to garnish

Coriander, to garnish

Kewpie mayonnaise, to serve

12 bao buns

Method

Marinate the chicken pieces for 2 - 3 hours (or overnight for maximum flavour) in the Gochujang chilli paste, sugar, tomato sauce, tamari sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic.

Steam the bao buns in the Easy Fry, Grill and Steam. Place the store bought bao buns (from frozen) in the air fryer basket and set to Steam at 100°C for 5 - 6 minutes. Once steamed, remove bao buns and set aside on a serving tray.

Change the plate into the die-cast aluminium grill plate. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for 5 minutes. Place the marinated chicken thighs onto the plate. Set to Air Fry for 15 minutes. After 7 minutes or halfway through the cooking cycle, give the basket a little shake to ensure all chicken pieces are evenly air fried.

Remove the chicken pieces from the air fryer and place in the bao buns. Garnish with sliced green onion, sesame seeds, mayonnaise and coriander leaves.

Tip: This is a juicy, sweet and savoury meal that you can serve as a snack or as an appetiser. Here chicken is served in bao buns, but you can also serve the chicken over rice or on top of a salad.
