Marksie

Marksie's Camp Tucker, NT

Step back 100 years for a traditional Stockman's Camp Oven meal  and entertainment. Sit round the camp fire under the stars at our Vestey's Hut site.

Let us take you back a hundred years to the era of huge cattle stations. One being Wave Hill, 450km South West of Katherine- bought in 1912 by the Lord Vestey Group. It has an area of 10,415 square miles (26,975 km2) Almost the size of Belgium. It was stocked with 75,000 cattle and 1,400horses. Only the 3rd largest in NT at the time,  the largest being Victoria River Downs. Wave Hill Station was sold in 1992, a wee while after the Wave Hill “walkout” made it too hard to run. Think about the distances on horseback, to muster and manage stock (branding, fencing etc), so makeshift camps were needed to provide food and overnight rest. Stories became the norm round the campfire, after the sun set, as they were strictly DRY nights.

Meat stew, Damper and Billy tea. Very basic in those days.

We want to pay Tribute to these Outback Cooks, but will flavour your Stew and Damper with the wonderful array of Native Bush foods, fruits, herbs and spices  that will have you begging for more. Menu link

Dine under the amazing canopy of stars of which you will be in awe. Get up close and personal with the wildlife, and maybe get to cuddle a baby wallaby.
